16th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress - Abstract Submission

“Optimising Performance & Promoting Health”

Invitation

The Scientific Organising Committee invite potential participants to submit original abstracts for presentation at the Congress on all aspects of sports medicine and science related aquatic sport, namely swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, water polo and related masters and disability sports.

The deadline for abstract submission has been extended to 31st December 2007

Abstracts submitted before the deadline will be acknowledged within five working days by email from Jane McKeown or another member of the Congress Secretariat.

Submissions will be assessed by an anonymised, peer-review process. The outcomes of the review will be communicated to corresponding authors by 31st January 2008.

Successful authors will be invited to present their work as either a podium or poster presentation. Authors whose abstracts are accepted will be invited to submit a full version of the paper by 14th March 2008.

All accepted abstracts and papers will be published in the 16th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress Book of Abstracts and Proceedings and acceptable abstracts will be published electronically in The Journal of Sports Sciences. This publication will be citable.


Submission Guidelines
  • The deadline for abstract submission is 31st December 2007.
  • All abstracts must be submitted and presented in English.
  • Abstracts can only be submitted via the Congress website at www.manchester2008.com/SportsMedicineCongress. Abstracts submitted by fax or email will not be accepted.
  • Confirmation of the receipt of abstracts will be made by email from the Congress Secretariat. You will be issued with an abstract reference number (ARN), which should be used in all future correspondence.
  • Please make sure a correct e-mail address and contact details are provided for the corresponding author.
  • Abstracts should be concise and presented in the standardised format as found on the website.
  • Abstracts should be original, related to Aquatic Sport and not previously been published.
  • Contributing authors should be identified by surname and initials. The name of the presenting author should be underlined.
  • Institution/s should indicate the location(s) where the work was undertaken.
  • The Title or Abstract should not contain reference to the institution/s where the work has been undertaken or other identifying features.
  • Authors are requested to select the most relevant theme under which they wish their abstract to be reviewed.
  • The Abstract should comprise of an Introduction, Materials/Methods, Results and Conclusions up to a maximum of 400 words.
  • The Abstract may include one table or one graph.
  • A maximum of 2 references, in the Vancouver format, may be used.
  • Avoid complex mathematical formulae, symbols and abbreviations wherever possible.
  • All abstracts must be submitted in text suitable for publication in the 16th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress Book of Abstracts as no reformatting or retyping will be undertaken. Suitable abstracts will be published in the Journal of Sports Sciences. This publication will be citable.
  • Submission of an abstract will infer a commitment to present work at the Congress if selected to do so.

Authors of abstracts that have been accepted for presentation will be invited to submit a publication ready, final version of a full paper by 14th March 2008. These papers will be published in the FINA 16th World Sports Medicine Congress Proceedings.


Podium Presentations

Oral Podium presentations will be selected from the submitted abstracts by the Scientific Organising Committee. Presentations will be strictly limited to 7 minutes with 2 minutes for questions. Audiovisual equipment will be available for presentations with projection assisted by a PC format computer only. Successful authors will be required to submit a PC version of their podium presentation electronically to Jane McKeown in the Congress Secretariat by 14th March 2008.


Poster Presentations

Poster presentations will be selected from the submitted abstracts by the Scientific Organising Committee. Posters will be displayed over the two days of the Congress and should be in place from the first coffee/tea break on Monday 7th April 2008 until the last coffee/tea break on Tuesday 8th April 2008.

Authors should be available to discuss their work during all coffee/tea breaks of the Congress.

Poster dimensions should not exceed 95cm (width) and 130cm (height). Velcro and leaflet holders will be provided at the venue.


Cameron Awards

In honour of the late Professor Malcolm Cameron’s significant contribution to the advancement of health and safety in aquatic athletes, a Cameron Award will be presented at the conclusion of the 16th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress for the best oral or poster presentation received at the Congress. The evaluation criteria for the award will include the following features:

  • Relevance to aquatic sport
  • Originality
  • Academic content
  • Practical application
  • Quality of presentation
